The History of Veterans Day

Pawleys Island custom home builderVeterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, November 11 was “dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day.'” As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans.

In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress — at the urging of the veterans service organizations — amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

In 1968, the Uniforms Holiday Bill ensured three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. Under this bill, Veterans Day was moved to the last Monday of October. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holiday on its original date. The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on Oct. 25, 1971.

Finally on September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed a law that returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of Nov. 11, beginning in 1978. Since then, the Veterans Day holiday has been observed on Nov. 11. [Shared by military.com]

Buy or Build? 4 Things to Consider

Pawleys Island buildersOne of the biggest questions facing homebuyers is whether to build a new home or buy an existing home. There are a few things that will influence your decision and should be considered before buying:

1. Design and Layout
New homes usually have bigger rooms, more built-in wardrobes / closets, and more bathrooms. If you are building a new home you can influence the layout and the finishes within the home. With an existing home you will inherit what the previous owner built or remodeled over time. Very rarely will an existing home be built and finished exactly to your liking.

2. Your Construction Experience
With an existing home you maybe required to renovate the house to incorporate features you want. This will be an added cost and take time to accomplish. Do you have adequate experience in home renovation? Do you have the tools necessary to do the job?

3. Location
In many areas there are no longer residential lots available to build a new home on so you have no choice but to buy an existing home. In this case, if you wanted something close to work, for example, you might have to buy an existing home. When you opt to build a new home the choices of where are wide and varied.

4. Expense
Sometimes buying an existing home will be less expensive than buying a new land and home package with the same features. If your budget is limited you may find it cheaper to buy an existing home and remodel it your self. As Pawleys Island builders we can build you your dream home and at an affordable price. Light Up the Landscape

Murrells Inlet home builderAs a Murrells Inlet home builder we know the pride of ownership you feel in your new custom built home. Once you have spent the time and money to have your property landscaped you should be able to enjoy the beauty of it both during the day and at night. Using the right type and amount of outdoor lighting can help highlight particular features of your home and yard at night in a stunning way.

The landscaping will look different at night when illuminated giving your home twice as much visual appeal. You’ll be able to appreciate your efforts in a whole new way at night. Additionally, some types of outdoor lighting can help add a layer of protection and safety to your home.

When chosen and installed properly landscape lights should reveal your home’s beauty, accentuate your favorite trees and flowers, highlight special features like a waterfall or pond and provide a relaxing environment for you to enjoy.

Murrells Inlet home builderTo get the best effect it is important to follow a few basic guidelines. First use a mixture of lighting types not all the same type and be creative. While solar path or garden lights can be attractive, some light sources should be concealed like those used for down lighting or up lighting. Consider using a timer for any that aren’t solar powered so they automatically turn on at night.

From a functional perspective landscape lights should increase safety and reduce accidents through increased visibility, provide security by deterring potential criminals or unwanted visitors, and they should help improve the property value of your home.

If you’re looking for a Murrells Inlet home builder that will listen and work with you and your lighting ideas, give us a call today. At SunBeLt Homes of Myrtle Beach, we pride ourselves in our customer service. We strive to be your #1 Murrells Inlet home builder.

Choosing the Right Sauna

Pawleys Island home builderA sauna has become a common commodity in many homes today. Many people find that a sauna is the perfect place to relax after a long day because it’s an ideal way to de-stress. Health benefits include relief from pain and stiffness of arthritis, treatment of respiratory problems, revives tired and strained muscles and aids in creating healthier skin.

Regardless of the size and style your sauna, it is the heater that provides the warm and steamy temperatures inside. The most basic type of heaters are those that rely on wood, gas or oil. They function simply — fuel is burned, heating up water to produce steam. Because of their use of an expensive resource, gas and oil heaters are not as popular today. Both require more space and special vents to drive out the toxic fumes in comparison to electric heaters.

Electric heaters are the more practical and greener option, when compared to wood, oil, or gas heaters. This is the primary reason why they have become the most popular form of heater for saunas today.

The latest development is the infrared sauna heater using infrared waves to heat the sauna environment. One of the main advantages of these units is that they have significantly reduced energy requirements, while continuing to provide a wide array of health benefits.

Pawleys Island home builderWhat’s the “right” sauna heater for you? It is very much a matter of personal choice. It mainly comes down to whether you prefer dry heat or steam heat. Cost, availability and energy efficiency are the other main deciding factors. Ultimately, it is simply a matter of whichever factors you value the most.

As your Pawleys Island home builder we’d be happy to talk to you about the installation of a sauna into your new or previously built home. Our designers will take the time to determine with you what is the best location for the sauna in your home. You can be assured that SunBeLt Homes of Myrtle Beach is the Pawleys Island home builder you can count on.

Going Green with Home Flooring

Myrtle Beach custom built homesIn the Myrtle Beach custom built homes that SunBeLt Homes designs and builds you have a say in everything about the process of building your new custom home — including the floors. It’s more and more popular for homeowners to be going green with the flooring in their Myrtle Beach custom built homes these days and for good reason.

Green flooring is made of mostly recycled material and does not draw heavily from the environment on virgin material. It is usually a longer lasting option than your conventional flooring and provides an opportunity to comply with the recycling regulations of the government. Green flooring is safer for the occupants of Myrtle Beach custom built homes and the environment at large. And it leaves you with a sense of pride in contributing to the environment rather than taking away from it.

Green flooring materials are generally recyclable whether it be the actual floor or the kind of carpet that is chosen for your home. Flooring comes in a range of recyclable but affordable material that is easy to use. Myrtle Beach custom built homesBamboo flooring is one such alternative to laminate or other conventional flooring. These flooring comes in various shapes, sizes and colors and can even be dyed to suit the interior color themes of a home. Bamboo is comparable to oak in terms of its stability and dent resistance. It can be re-grown far more easily than an oak tree.

While choosing green flooring, think about how easily renewable the material is. Cork and linoleum are far easier to re-grow, even bamboo. While a hard wood tree might take 50 years or so to be replaced, bamboo takes about 3-5 years. Marmoleum is a flooring product available in rolls or tiles. Marmoleum is a product of linseed oil, rosin, jute, wood flour and limestone.

Wisely Protecting Your Investment

Myrtle Beach new home builderMaking the decision to have a Myrtle Beach new home builder build you a custom home instead of purchasing an existing home is a big decision. There are many more decisions to be made than when buying an already-built home. A few of those other than choosing a Myrtle Beach new home builder is selecting insurance policies and getting various warranties.

Everyone should protect their home with a good homeowners insurance policy. We all know that and mortgage lenders require it. But another great way to relieve some of the anxiety of home-ownership is by protecting your new home with a home warranty. A home warranty is different from homeowners insurance and covers items that are not typically covered in your standard homeowners insurance policy. There are two main types of home warranties: appliance and systems warranties, and structural warranties.

An appliance and systems warranty covers repairs and maintenance that may be needed on specific appliances or systems (such as HVAC or plumbing). This type of work is typically not covered in your Myrtle Beach new home builderstandard homeowners insurance policy. With an appliance and systems warranty, there is a cost for the warranty itself, and then you pay a set service fee if a service call is needed. Policies like this can be very cost effective because the service fee is usually less than what it would cost to get the appliance or system fixed on your own.

A structural warranty is a little different. It protects you for a set time period (typically 10 years) against structural defects that may occur which would render the house unsafe or unsanitary and therefore, unlivable. Structural warranties may also come packaged with workmanship and systems warranties, which provide additional protection for you, the new homeowner. Many a Myrtle Beach new home builder offers a structural warranty with every new home they build.

Adding a Home Theater to your New Home

Myrtle Beach custom home builderA home theater is a top-selling feature being added to many custom homes today. There are less people are going out to movie theaters as higher-end equipment is becoming more and more available to homeowners. People not only have the option to buy huge flat screen TVs that are suitable to be movie screens, but they have access to digital projectors, movie theater chairs, and much more. Going to the movies can be a sanctuary for some, but for movie buffs, having a home theater in your home is a dream come true.

There are a few things you should look out for when you are planning to add a home theater to your new home. Your Myrtle Beach custom home builder may be qualified to assist you with the planning of the theater if they’ve built several before, but you also have the option of hiring a contractor who specializes in custom home theater design

Myrtle Beach custom home builderRegardless of what Myrtle Beach custom home builder you choose to assist you with your project, the first thing you should do is analyze the layout of the house and the layout of the room you plan to put your theater in. How much space is available? Where in the house is it located? Will you need additional sound-proofing to prevent everyday background noise? How is the natural acoustics of the room? Do you plan on putting other items in the room like sofas or a bar? How far should the seating be from the screen based on the room size?

You may have already addressed this in a first rough-draft plan, but an essential part of your custom home theater will be the speakers. You’ll probably want surround sound. You’ll also want to address proper ventilation for the room to ensure your video equipment, speakers, and movie-goers can all breathe easy!

When you use SunBeLt Homes as your Myrtle Beach custom home builder we’ll work with you to make sure you’re happy with the layout and design every step of the way.
